This is a 10/10 game! Excellent story, awesome strategy puzzles, a mix of chess-like game with the pure essence of an epic RPG game. The only question is: are you up for the challenge?

Alright, so I'm not entirely sure what just happened but I'd appreciate it if someone could lend a hand. I recently picked up and started playing Soul Nomad and the World Eaters as my go to 'before bed' game, and I'm about 8 hour in when something odd happened. Immediately after finishing the 13th battle the whole emulator decides that it's just tired and drops down to 50% speed. Any time I go into my menu or into a battle map, I consistently stayed at 50%, never any lower.
Now here's where things get a bit weird. As usual I started scouring forums and google for an answers, trying every fix I could find from Power Settings, to presets, to trying to uninstall unrelated software. I played with the emulator settings, and disabled frame limiting, turned the emu on and off, etc etc. Nothing worked. so after trying for a bit I turn the emulator off and then came here to make a post asking for help. Except I realized I forgot how long I had played so i boot it back up to check the time, and suddenly the game's speed was running at around 500%, several thousands frames per second out of nowhere. I immediately ran back into the settings and reenabled frame limiting and put it back to preset 3 where I had it before and...... now the slow down problem is gone. I have a map running right now at a crisp 60 FPS and I have absolutely no idea what happened or why.
The problem SEEMS fixed for now, but I'd love to know exactly what could have caused this, especially since I've decided to start going on a tour of the past since I didn't have a PS2 growing up. Lots of great games I missed out on, and if this were to become a consistent problem.. Might put a damper on some of those plans.
Update: as requested my specs
I am using a brand new ASUS gaming laptop with 12 gigs of RAM, a terrabyte of memory, windows 10 operating system, and an NVIDEA GeForce GTX 970M graphics card.
I am using PSX2 version 1.4.0, though it might be worth noting that the memory card data was carried over from a previous 1.2 install. All of my settings are default, preset 3, with the exception that I am using a PS4 controller via bluetooth. As for software the only one I have played so far is an ISO of Soul Nomad and the World Eaters, which is a sprite based tactical rpg by Nippon Ichi Software, so it's not the most graphically taxing game out there.
Also as mentioned I did temporarily disable the frame limiter, however it took restarting the emulation 2 or 3 times before the insane speed up occurred.
